The New Borne Offroad Winch
Posted by Derrick Lovell on
In the world of winches, there are a quite a few options out there that you can go with, but not all winches are created equally. Just like with any other product or brand; you have to do something that sets you apart without sacrificing quality. Well thats exactly what Borne Offroad set out to do with their new winch series.
Born (pun intended) from the Mishimoto family comes the 10k & 12k synthetic winches. Borne has created an IP68-rated winch delivering the best in wet and weather protection. They have designed this winch to be able to adhere and perform in the most demanding of off-road conditions. Built with a pure copper motor and a durable 3-stage planetary gear system; this winch is set to conquer all of your obstacles effortlessly. The outside shell of this winch supports a black coated fairlead with a larger radius opening to help reduce rope wear. Paired with the fair-lead is a 3/8" high capacity synthetic rope with an anti-abrasive sheath to prevent damage and increase life expectancy. And the best part is that all of this is backed by a lifetime warranty.
Something that Borne does that many others do not is that they add a hint of customization to your set up. You have the choice of 5 different rope color options (red, blue, black, grey, and orange) and each is accompanied by a forged alloy steel hook with a 1.5" opening for snag free rigging, finished off with a durable gunmetal powder-coat. The most advanced, and probably coolest feature of this winch, is going to be the RFID-linked remote. This remote can be used both wired or wirelessly. So you really get the best of both worlds. The advanced remote claims to offer exceptional range and reliability with a nice ergonomic design for comfort and precise operation. This system prioritizes safety with not only the RFID-linked remote, but with recessed buttons and an automatic shut-off.
Now while we have not yet had the chance to put this winch through the ringer, we can give it a lot of credit to how the company has designed these winches at a competitive price point. Their packaging for shipment was the first thing that stands out. As we all know, winches are not a light piece of equipment. And a lot of times they get beat and battered during transit. Borne packed their products well and ours arrived in perfect condition. Upon pulling the winch out of the box, we could see that this winch seems to be built pretty well. A lot of times you can find some odd weld points or even just "feel" the lower quality used on some of the more inexpensive winches out there. This winch seems well made and feels as such. If we had to pick one thing that we do not care too much for on this winch would be the aesthetics. It doesnt quite bring that "premium" look that you typically see with brands such as warn or superwinch which can potentially make some feel its is of lesser quality or considered a budget winch. But as they say, do not judge a book by its cover. This winch has some serious performance and quality built into it. Overall, everything about this winch sounds pretty solid and should be considered when you are on your winch buying quest. Its very comparable in a lot of aspects as other winches on the market in terms of stats, pricing, and even warranty. What really sets this thing apart is the option to have a wired or wireless connection. We can see ability to choose coming in handy in multiple scenarios when outdoors. We will eventually get this thing out in the field to test and see how it does! But from what we know, this should definitely be a winch to consider if you are in need of one!
